It can get pretty cold in the Black Hills in the wintertime. The best
time to ride Iron Mountain Road is during the summer months. Anytime
between May and September are usually good, though there can be pop up
showers and an occasional wind. This is a reasonably short ride.
Although it is only about 9 miles, it is a real adventure! Ride through
the curves and hills of the great Black Hills. There are plenty of
Twisties and scenery on Iron Mountain road. You will curve over and
under yourself!
I f you like Tunnels, this is one ride you should not miss. You will
ride through three Tunnels along Iron Mountain road. If you are going
northbound, you can see Mount Rushmore through one of the tunnels as
you approach. This is a great picture opportunity. One of the unique
features of this ride are the corkscrews. The loops are unusual. There
is also a split in the highway where the two lanes separate for a bit
to meander around the trees.
Being in the Black Hills, there are wild animals everywhere. Don't be
surprised if you see Buffalo along Iron
Mountain Road. When I rode it
recently, there was a Buffalo crossing in front of my motorcycle. Thank
goodness for load pipes! Motorcycles are everywhere on this ride. This
great ride is a Motorcycle Playground. You will most likely see many of
your riding brothers and sisters.
Enjoy a famous national Monument along your ride. Iron Mountain road is
Near Mount Rushmore. There are several places that you can get great
pictures of Mount Rushmore as you ride Iron Mountain Road. Many bikers
include this ride as one of the events during the Sturgis Bike Rally. A
great time to ride Iron Mountain road is during the Sturgis Motorcycle
Rally. If you are able to attend the rally, be sure to ride Iron
Mountain road.
