Rockingham Dragway

Rockingham Dragway - Home of the final stop of the Great Smokeout Rally - The Long road riders finish line.
I attended the smokeout rally at the Rockingham Dragway in the summer of 2009. It was about a six and half hour ride for me, and a great one at that! I was fortunate enough to ride across a portion of the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee on my way there. The Smokeout rally was held at the Rockingham Dragway and is becoming a very popular event. The smoke out rally is put on by The Horse: Backstreet Choppers.

The Rockingham Dragway is a nice little dragstrip. It is near Rockingham North Carolina. Anyone with the desire could register to race a motorcycle on the Rockingham Dragway. Several riders raced on the Rockingham Dragway while I was there. It was fun to watch them. Even the ones with little experience didn't do bad at all.

If you like custom built motorcycles, this is one place to see many of them. From bobbers, choppers, and home-built creations, the multitude of fascinating motorcycles is amazing. The smokeout rally brings together custom builders and fans to enjoy camaraderie and a great time together.

The riders rode from Cottonwood Arizona all of the way to Rockingham Dragway. This 2000 mile ride created many challenges for the riders as well as some great riding. I had the chance to talk to one of the riders. He had 'made' his motorcycle only a few weeks before the ride. It was a hardtail and had no windshield or fairing. His handlebar grips looked like the little plastic ones from a bicycle, and his footpegs were bolts.

This long road ride brings together the passion of the builders with that of the ride. The Rockingham Dragway is a good place to end this fantastic ride. Anyone can join in, you just register and you can ride the long road too. The riders on the long road, headed for Rockingham dragway, ride about 350 miles per day and stop to rest and recuperate each evening before doing it again the next day.

The long road riders had a section all to themselves. There was a special section roped off for the motorcycles. It was only fitting considering all they had done on the road to get to Rockingham Dragway.

Motorcycle clubs and riding groups come in to the smokeout at Rockingham Dragway from all over. There were several groups of Hells Angels there. Several other groups were there too, even some riders from Canada. Everyone was civil and had a great time together.

One of the events sounded like so much fun, I couldn't resist. There was a minibike race in one of the parking lots. One of the caveats to the minibike races was that you had to wear a superhero costume in order to race.

There were more than just motorcycles to see at the smoke out. There were these really cool low rider cars at Rockingham Dragway. I didn't expect to see these and had no idea they would be there, but was in awe by them. Some of them were only inches from the ground!

Another great event at Rockingham Dragway involved a different type of competition. There was a motorcycle show during the smokeout. The custom built motorcycles stood against each other and were judged in several categories. Just to see those machines was well worth the trip to Rockingham Dragway.
