Tellico Lake
 |
Tellico Lake is a
beautiful, picturesque place to go for a great day of Motorcycle
riding. There are several routes to choose, but my favorite is
southbound through the village, and along the waterway. It is located
just south of Knoxville, in beautiful East Tennessee.
Riding through the 'village', you can not only see Tellico Lake itself,
but the homes on the water, with docks stretching out to the awaiting
water toys. The best time to catch views of Tellico Lake are early
spring and late fall.
Tellico Lake was actually planned as a part of the Fort Loudon
reservoir. The dam diverts water in Loudon. These two together provide
better water navigation, flood control, and even produce some power.
There is a canal connecting the two, so there is no need for a lock.
Besides riding, you can boat to 21 different states, the Great Lakes,
and the Gulf of Mexico all from Tellico Lake.
Tellico Lake was created, like some others in the area, by the
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) as a result of the building of the dam
itself. It is about 16,000 acres big and has almost 360 miles of
shoreline. That is alot of potential riding! Construction started in
the late 60s, and the Dam was finished in 1979.
Did you know that the Endangered Species Act almost stopped the
construction that created Tellico Lake? Yup, they found a new species
of fish - the Snail Darter, and didn't know if they lived elsewhere as
well. Fortunately, more were found at other places, so construction
resumed. This was the last major one done by the TVA, however.
If you look, you may be able to see a reconstruction of the original
Fort Loudon while you’re riding your motorcycle around
Tellico Lake. This fort was built by the British during the French and
Indian war. Another attraction not far away is the Sequoyah Birthplace
Museum.
Tellico Lake not only offers some great motorcycle riding, but there
are also activities like fishing, boating, and camping here too. If you
get the chance, you should consider taking a ride around beautiful
Tellico Lake. You won't regret it!
