So how the heck do you use a Magnesium Fire Starter? It's really not hard, and using one makes it much quicker and easier to get your campfire started. Just grab a knife and scrape the side of the Magnesium Fire Starter. The shavings will begin to come off. You want to create a pile of shavings about the size of a quarter.

It's a good idea to have something beneath the shavings, like a rock, cardboard, or you may even make a small hole for them if it is really windy. Once you finish scraping the shavings from your Magnesium Fire Starter, have your tinder, kindling, and fuel wood ready.

There is a flint on the side of the Magnesium Fire Starter. When you scrape a knife down the flint, it will create sparks to ignite the shavings you made. Once the shavings ignite, they should catch the tinder and kindling on fire. You might have to scrape the flint several times to ignite the shavings. It’s a good idea to practice using your Magnesium Fire Starter before you actually need it.
